Caring for a loved one with memory loss requires more than just medical support; it requires a new way of connecting. At EHA Elder Care, our approach to elder care in Malaysia emphasizes the importance of “heart-to-heart” communication to reduce frustration and promote emotional well-being for seniors.

If you are caring for a parent or senior experiencing cognitive changes, these eight tips can help you communicate more clearly and kindly.

1. Use Simple and Direct Language

As cognitive abilities change, processing complex sentences can become difficult. Speak slowly and use short, direct sentences. Instead of saying, "It’s a beautiful day, would you like to put on your shoes and go for a walk in the garden?" try: "Let's go for a walk."

2. Maintain Eye Contact and a Calm Tone

Non-verbal cues speak louder than words. Approach your loved one from the front, maintain eye contact, and keep your voice gentle. A calm demeanor helps a senior feel safe and focused on the interaction.

3. Minimize Background Distractions

Seniors often struggle to filter out competing noises. To have a meaningful conversation, choose a quiet setting. Turn off the television or radio so they can focus entirely on your voice and face.

4. Ask One Question at a Time

Too many choices can lead to "decision paralysis." Avoid open-ended questions like "What would you like to eat?" Instead, offer two clear options: "Would you like tea or coffee?"

5. Listen with Immense Patience

Processing a thought takes time. Give your loved one extra seconds to find their words. Avoid the urge to finish their sentences or interrupt, as this can cause them to shut down or become agitated.

6. Utilize Visual Aids and Gestures

When words fail, use your hands or props. Pointing to a glass when asking if they are thirsty, or showing a photo of a family member, can help bridge the gap in understanding.

7. Avoid Arguing or Correcting

If a senior says something factually incorrect, try not to argue. In their reality, what they are saying is true. Instead of correcting them, gently redirect the conversation or provide reassurance. Maintaining their emotional peace is the priority.

8. Reassure Through Repetition

It is common for seniors with memory challenges to repeat themselves. Respond with the same level of kindness every time. Reassuring them with a gentle touch or a calm reply builds trust and reduces anxiety.
